Paris Hilton avoids jail, gets off easy on cocaine charge

Heiress Paris Hilton appeared in court early Monday to face the judge for her cocaine charges.

As was expected, Paris got off easy and avoided jail when she struck a plea deal, which kept her out of jail and placed her in probation for a year.

Paris, 29, plead guilty to two misdemeanors, one of which was drug possession and the other obstructing an officer. The celebutante will serve 200 hundred hours of community service, attend a substance abuse program and pay a fine of $2,000.

If she gets arrested during her probation, the judge said she would be facing a year in jail.

"The purpose here is to change your conduct. [The Clark County Detention Center] is not the Waldorf=Astoria." Justice of the Peace Joe Bonaventure told Paris.

Defendant agrees that an arrest for any charge, excluding minor traffic violations for which a citation is issued, shall result in the immediate termination of her probation and the execution of the suspended sentences."

Paris' attorney, David Chesnoff told reporters that, "She was treated like anyone else would be treated under the circumstances, and I'm very proud of the way she's dealt with this. I think she's on the road to success and I wish her personally the best."
