December 20, 2010 - 'The Vampire Diaries': Zach Roerig proud to 'hold down the human fort' as Matt -
The Vampire Diaries star Zach Roerig spoke with Zap2it about his character being one of the only people in Mystic Falls to not know about supernatural beings.
Zap2it's Carina Adly MacKenzie claims she's tired of hearing negative things about TVD's Matt Donavan (Zach) and decided to talk to the actor directly so she can set things straight for us.

"I must say that I am honored to hold down the human fort in Mystic Falls," Zach told Carina. Which, in reality, not being aware of all the crazy things with vampires, witches and werewolves that go on in the town, takes some doing!
Carina claims that this is what makes Matt a "wild card", and we tend to agree, as anything can happen as far as he's concerned. Take the scene where bad girl vampire Katherine (Nina Dobrev) compelled him to provoke Tyler (Michael Trevino) so the werewolf curse could be triggered, all without him knowing a thing!
Candice Accola says she'll be doing a lot of kissing on 'The Vampire Diaries'
"Matt's strength and weakness are the same. He doesn't know about the vampires. So he could think he's like superman, and then get his neck broken." Zach explained.
Another reason to love Matt is his maturity for a high school student, Carina points out. He's actually a nice guy who respects Elena and stopped chasing her once she professed her love for Stefan (Paul Wesley).
So, now he finds himself still caring for his new and already ex-girlfriend Caroline (Candice Accola) (her becoming a vampire got in the way of the relationship and since he can't know anything, the relationship had to end).
Vampire Diaries' Michaela McManus spills on werewolves and Damon's shower scene
But as we fans all know, Caroline is now very good friends with Tyler and he's a werewolf, hence, the better pick for her. She does still have feelings for Matt, however, so we will now enter a new love triangle on TVD.
Most importantly though, Matt is what links us, those who are watching The Vampire Diaries, to the show. He's normal and the things in his daily life resemble ours more than anyone else on the show.
Of course, Matt does have his share of problems too. He still feels "guilt-ridden."
"Getting over fighting with his friend is one thing, but having the death of another person on his shoulders, that's not the kind of thing Matt can just brush off." He said.
Weekly recap for the CW's 'The Vampire Diaries' news
"Everyone knows Matt's going to snap. If Matt was let in on the fact that there are vampires, and all the other craziness that's going on, that's a lot - to find out his sister was killed, and it was covered up by his friends. His original girlfriend that he loved was involved, his second girlfriend was involved and now she's messing with a werewolf - that's a lot to process."
Needless to say, Matt is definitely not boring, and Carina reassures us that he is going to get his shining moment on the show when his time is right.
